How an Apple a Day May Keep You Younger

On my Picky List post I told you that if you eat an apple before a fatty or sugary meal it will help decrease the absorption of cholesterol and keep your insulin levels regulated. Would you like to know how?
It’s the fiber and pectin that play the greatest role. You see fiber is essential for proper digestion and absorption of foods. Unfortunately, many of us are not even coming close to having enough fiber intake in our diets to make our digestion efficient. (When I talk about fiber, I’m not talking about grain or wheat fiber either…more to come on that)
Pectin is a potent antioxidant and is also a soluble fiber (which means it is a fiber your body can break down). Fiber aids in digestion because it adds bulk to the digestive tract and slows the digestion process and it also helps carry undigested material out of your body.
The fiber from the apple prepares your colon for what is about to enter. In our example pizza which has very little “good fiber” in it and is full of dairy and fat which is hard to digest without “good fiber”.

To help you understand lets take a look at eating pizza without consuming an apple first. This is what happens:
1. Due to the pizza containing virtually no “good fiber” it is rapidly digested into mostly sugars from the crust. There is also no “good fiber” to bind the fats and carry them out of your body so you also absorb more of the fat.
2. Because the pizza is converted into mostly sugar your insulin rapidly rises to deal with all the sugar.
3. Over production of insulin will make / cause you to age faster because insulin is a mitogentic hormone (makes your cells replicate faster) so your aging process is sped up. That’s why most anti aging techniques focus on keeping your insulin levels low.

Low insulin levels= slower aging = younger looking you!

Now let’s look at eating pizza after consuming an apple first:

1. You supplied your colon (gut) with “good fiber” so it is ready for the onslaught which the pizza will shortly bring.
2. The pizza enters your gut and the “good fiber” from the apple binds to the fat and sugar from the grain in the crust (remember all grains become sugar when digested).
3. The “good fiber” from the apple keeps the insulin levels lower because the sugars are not absorbed into the body so quickly and many are eliminated out the other end…same thing happens with the fats. Less fats means less chances of raised cholesterol.

Aren’t you glad the apple is no longer the forbidden fruit?

Hormone Epidemic Part II

Why Is This Not Just A Woman’s Problem Anymore
Despite what you might be thinking, hormone imbalance and “dis-eases” are not just a woman’s problem. Why? The organ that plays a gigantic role in your Estrogen levels does not even produce Estrogen…but it is responsible for eliminating or not eliminating it from your body.
Almost all hormone issues are not caused by excessive estrogen production, but inefficient elimination or deactivation of hormones in the liver.
Your liver is responsible for clearing your body of excess or non used items. To make is simple, think of your liver as having two oil filters inside. We will call them filter 1 and filter 2. Filter 1 is first to act. It will either make things less toxic or more toxic than the original substance that entered into it.
Filter 2 takes the less or more toxic substance and makes it safe for your body to eliminate through the urine or feces. The major difference between filter 1 and filter 2 is the speed at which they work and the different nutrients your liver needs for them to do their jobs.
We are going to focus on liver filter 2 and how it eliminates estrogen from the body. Estrogen comes in various forms. We will call them Estrogen 2, Estrogen 4 and Estrogen 16. To make it very simple Estrogen 2 is good or nice to your body. Estrogen 4 and 16 are bad. They are very active forms of estrogen and are more likely to cause dis-ease if in this form.
Here’s the important part for today. In order to make Estrogen 2 (good kind) we need a substance called Endo 3 Carbinol. You can get this compound in your body by taking a high quality supplement containing Endo 3 Carbinol.
The really great news is Endo 3 Carbinol is not some rare compound only found in a magic berry from the Amazon. You can find an abundance of Endo 3 Carbinol naturally in cruciferous vegetables (Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Turnips)
What I really love about vegetables is their ability not only to remove deficiencies and toxicities from your body, but at the same time they supply you with sufficiency and purity.
Who would have thought that vegetables would be so important to your hormone balance and healthy Estrogen metabolism? May be that’s why the American Cancer Society raised the recommended servings of vegetables per day to 6 to 11 per day instead of 4 to 5 per day.
And best of all, I have never seen a disclaimer of ill side effects due to eating too many vegetables.
The tip to take home is make sure you’re eating at least 6-11 serving of vegetables per day to provide enough Endo 3 Carbinol for Estrogen 2 (good) metabolism and elimination from your body.

Are Pollution, Chemicals (xenoestrogens) and Life Style Responsible For The Rise In Hormone Related “Dis-eases?”

I have been studying health and wellness since 1995. Since that time I have been reading a lot about and personally observing a scary trend in our Country. The rate of hormone related dis-eases has been steadily rising. How can this be? Don’t we have the best health care in the world… the most abundant food supply on earth… more medication available than any other country in the world? We do, but this does not seem to be working. Take a look at what the research has proven.

What did that just say? The more developed the country you live in the more likely you are to get breast cancer? Women in the US have the highest rates of breast cancer in the world?
Have you ever thought about the fact that we have gotten so far away from what’s naturally good for our bodies in this country…that we are creating dis-ease through the very things we are using to treat them? Medications, synthetic hormones, pesticides and other toxic chemicals may actually be making us worse. If not what else could it be? If you know please tell me?
It’s not genetic! Only a minute percentage of these problems are related to your genes. Research has shown that only 5%-10% of breast cancer is caused by the “cancer gene”. Read it for yourself…

“About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be linked to changes (mutations) in certain genes. The most common gene changes are those of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.”

Our way of life is not only affecting women, but men as well. Due to estrogen dominance look what’s happening to men.

I hope you see that what we have been doing is not working. You must understand the causes of disease to protect yourself. To help you, I will be sharing with you how to remove the deficiencies/toxicities from your life and body and replace them with sufficiency/purity. That is the only way to get well.

Is your gut leaking? And is it making you sick?

Dysbiosis (Leaky Gut) and “Bad” Bacterial Overgrowth are an American Epidemic.

I have been studying health and wellness since 1995. My studies have led me to research not only the latest health information available, but I also studied the diet our ancestors ate during the Paleolithic period thousands of years ago. Believe it or not, there are actually studies on the Paleolithic and hunter/gather societies and what they ate. Great advancements in science and technology have been achieved over that last 10,000 years, but some of these advancements seem to be causing more harm than good. Technology has made our nation the most advanced in the world. We have an abundance of hospitals, medications, doctors and no shortage of food…if you really want to call what many of us eat “food”.
When I look at the research from studies documenting the health and lifestyles of humans 10,000 years ago versus today, I discovered something scary. The only thing that has happened is we have gotten sicker, and managed to create some “dis-eases” that did not exist years ago. How could we be getting sicker and creating dis-ease? What has changed? I was able to quickly eliminate a cause that we have been brainwashed with, the reasoning that says, “ it’s genetic or it runs in my family.” Bad genes are not to blame, and this is why…
In all the research related papers and books that I have read, I found…
1. That our genes have changed less than 0.02% (two hundredth of a percent) in 40,000 YEARS!
2. The Paleolithic hunter/gathers did not have many of our modern illnesses… they had no hospitals or medications available…and their genes were virtually identical to ours today.
Since we have the same genes now that we had 40,000 years ago, what is different? I will tell you…their diets, movement, level of activity, exposure to toxins and emotional stressors…so…basically their lifestyles were the complete opposite of ours.
I will explain the differences in all of these factors and how it affects our health in the near future, but for this post we are going to focus on diet and how it affects the health of our guts (intestinal digestive tract) and ultimately the health of our bodies.
In a nut shell this is how our fiber deficient, nutrient deficient diets are destroying the health of our guts and our bodies.
One thing you must know is that our bodies work just like the world around us. Our environment is damaged and destroyed by excess pollution. Just as our body/internal environment is damaged and destroyed by excess pollution. The pollution in our bodies comes mainly from processed foods which are deficient in nutrients and fiber.
Our guts are the first line of defense and up to 70% of the bodies lymph tissue surrounds the gut. Why would you need 70% of your immune system surrounding your gut? The gut is one of the first areas where things have the opportunity to enter your body. If something toxic gets through your gut and into the body you need to be able to eliminate it or fight it.
Here is how the gut works… you need “good” bacteria to ferment and break down your food so it can be absorbed. “Bad” bacteria also lives in your gut and acts like a parasite living off the food you eat. So if you don’t have the “good” bacteria in your gut then toxins easily pass through the gut into the body. Now your lymph system and immune system must take care of it.
Toxins pass through the gut = Immune Response = Pain or Sickness.
So there’s the problem. If your gut is unprotected and you don’t have healthy bacteria you are going to be sick.

What should you do? Increase your fresh fruit and vegetable consumption, unless you’re eating 70%-80% raw fruits and vegetable every day you will have a gut imbalance. I know that sounds like a lot, but there are several, time effective ways to bring these foods into your diet (I cover this in the report.) The “good” bacteria come from fruits and veggies. The “bad” bacteria come from breads, cereals, processed foods, soda and the other man made foods we consume. The foods you eat either make you more pure or more toxic. It’s just that simple.
The traditional western diet will cause the “bad” bacteria to flourish. The “bad” bacteria will actually eat the food you eat, so they can keep multiplying and take over your gut. This is gross but, what your body is left with is the waste or “bad bacteria poop” they excrete back into your gut. Left unchecked this cycle will “snowball” and continue to make your body more and more toxic and sick. This condition is correctable, but if undiagnosed and untreated it can reach a point of no return!
How healthy do you think you will be…
If you are living on a diet of “bad bacteria poop?”
There are four steps to restoring the healthy bacteria in your gut:
1. Remove the bad (such as harmful chemicals from our environment, allergens and Pathogens)
2. Replace the “bad” with the “good”
3. Repair (a special diet may be need to restore intestinal health which includes villi and microvilli health)
4. Replenish (add nutrients like probiotics, fermentable fruits and vegetables to support the growth and repair of healthy bacteria flora)

Kids On Cholesterol Drugs?

Kids On Cholesterol Drugs? Are You Kidding?

If I were you I would be more worried about this than gas prices.

I have been studying health and wellness since 1995. I have conducted thousands of office visits and helped hundreds of people restore purity and sufficiency to their bodies, resulting in amazing health, but I am amazed at the number of sick people still walking around. It’s actually abnormal in today’s society to be healthy. How can everyone be so sick?
After years of studying, I have discovered some startling findings on my quest to determine why we keep getting sicker and sicker. It just did not make any sense to me. How can we be the wealthiest country in the world, have the most hospitals, drugs and technology and be one of the sickest countries? Something is seriously wrong with giving kids cholesterol drugs and we need to take action quickly before it’s too late.
The Medical Community has been pounding the need of cholesterol drugs into Americans for years (it runs in your family, it’s genetic, you need our drugs)… they have done a great job of convincing you that you need them and now there after your kids. Do you realize how much this expands there market and their profit? That’s what it’s about, Money.
It’s not about the health of your child. If it was then they would be teaching you and your children to be healthy so you would not need drugs. Instead they want to basically have your child on drugs for life.

If cholesterol drugs work so well…then why is Heart Disease still one of the leading killers in the US?
It’s not because people are not taking their drugs, there’re taking them, and still dying! Only with lower cholesterol!

Let’s review the facts about cholesterol:
We have been led to believe that cholesterol is some raging disease and that you can’t do anything about it. Why? Because like every other “dis-ease” in our country it’s blamed on genetics. You see, if they can convince you cholesterol is bad and genetics is the cause then you can’t do anything about it, except take a drug…and be on that drug for life.
Being on a drug for life will make some people very, very rich but probably not you. They’re actually recommending that KIDS take cholesterol medications now! What for? So we can have an even sicker generation than the one we have now. How much more money will “they” make from this?
Here’s the truth about cholesterol.
1. Cholesterol is only “bad” when it is oxidized…oxidation makes it sticky.
a. “Oxidation leads to inflammation and plaque formation within the arteries no matter what your cholesterol level is. In fact, the majority of people dying of heart disease have NORMAL LDL cholesterol levels! The reason: because their LDL cholesterol and arteries are oxidized.”

2. People with normal or low cholesterol are just as likely to die as those with high levels. (remember it’s about oxidation, not your total cholesterol)
a. Over 13 million Americans take drugs to control their cholesterol. However 50% of people with normal cholesterol still have heart attacks.

3. High Cholesterol is genetic…genetic plays only a very, very small part…nowhere close to explaining the true number we’re seeing.
a. Familial hypercholesterol is 1/500 or 0.2%

The truth is you need cholesterol for many normal and required body functions, to make cell membranes, sex, stress hormones. What do you think happens if you or your child needs higher cholesterol to deal with excess stress (resulting in higher levels so you can produce the necessary stress hormones for an adequate stress response) and you artificially reduce it with a drug? Say hello to depression…but don’t worry there is a drug for that too.

What you may not know, or have been told is that cholesterol is mainly produced in the liver and is a direct component of your sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone). The major roll of LDL, you know the “bad” cholesterol is to transport cholesterol from the liver to the gonads to make your sex hormones, which are necessary for development especially during puberty.

What do you think happens when you take a statin drug, like Lipitor, to block LDL production? Now you can’t transport cholesterol to the gonads to make sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone). How will this affect the child development?

You need your cholesterol but you must keep your oxidative stress under control so your LDL does not become sticky. Oxidative stress comes from pore diet, environmental pollutants, drugs, radiation and other life style issues.

A poor diet, especially ones high in processed grains, breads, whole wheat, low fat foods and sugars will cause your cholesterol and oxidation to rise making your cholesterol dangerous.

Cholesterol production is mostly insulin driven so that must be addressed first. The number one intervention is always diet and exercise to control insulin levels and slow oxidation in your body. The only side effect of healthier diet and more exercise is a better looking body, lower cholesterol, lower oxidation, increases libido and the ability to do something about it…without a drug or the possibility of blindness.

High cholesterol is not a genetic problem for over 99% of Americans. It’s a lifestyle problem that need to be addressed at the cause…not with more drugs.

Do You Suffer From Fibromyalgia?…The Invisible “Disease”

Why do I call Fibromyalgia the invisible disease? Because there are no laboratory tests to detect the widespread pain, fatigue, TMJ, poor memory, headaches and all the other miserable symptoms that usually accompany Fibromyalgia. How can a “disease” not be detected in blood work, Cat Scans, MRI’s, or with the use of other technology? You are about to find out.

Fibromyalgia is routinely diagnosed with a quick 5 minute physical examination where a physician or other health care practitioner prods 18 specific points on your body. If you have pain with 11 of them, guess what? You have Fibromyalgia. And now you must deal with this condition for the rest of your life. What a terrible diagnosis to give someone.

So we are faced with treating a disease that has no definitive testing procedure, and leaves the person diagnosed with Fibromyalgia with little hope.

Once diagnosed you now have a few very limited options for treatment. Anti-Inflammatory drugs, neurological drugs like Neurontin, steroids, or a combination of other medications, which usually offer little to no real relief from your pain. And these drugs all have very unpleasant side effects.

In order to get well you must identify the cause of the problem.

By studying and understanding the healthy body’s physiology, I am able to quickly observe and diagnose improper physiology. The key areas I would look at are as follows:

  • The pH of your body tissues
  • Liver function
  • Kidney function
  • Digestive function
  • Adrenal function
  • Electrolyte status

By observing the different functions of your body listed previously, I can observe how your body’s systems are working together, or not working together. Based on the observation and testing that I perform, I am able to provide the resources that will help you correct your health issues and keep you healthy.

The best form of treatment is early detection, and now through Functional Medicine Assessments we are able to detect illness in it’s earliest stages. This type of testing and evaluation is revolutionary and is changing the way in which healthcare is delivered. The reason Functional Medicine is so powerful and effective is that it is medical science and testing that allows your doctor to deal with the CAUSE of your illness. Treating the cause of an illness leads to a removal of symptoms and is much more cost effective and time efficient.

After reading case study after case study, I have found what I believe to be the four main factors contributing to Fibromyalgia (which are very similar to the same physiology causing chronic fatigue.) There is dysfunction in three vital systems and one major cellular component.

  1. Liver (toxicity/stress)
  2. GI (colon/digestive tract)
  3. Adrenal stress or dysfunction (over or under functioning adrenal glands.)
  4. Mitochondrial damage (mitochondria are the power houses of the cell that produce energy)

There are three critical steps to get your liver, GI, and adrenal systems back to health, and turn the power supply back on in your mitochondria.

  1. ELIMINATE PROCESSED FOOD – especially foods that contain gluten and phytic acid. Gluten is found in all grain (except sprouted grains like “Ezekiel BreadTM”). Gluten is a protein that is very difficult to digest because we lack the specialized enzymes to effectively break it down, which causes damage to the cells in the GI tract. Phytic acid also found in grains and wheat products decreases the absorption of some essential minerals like Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Zinc, which help decrease cytotoxins and prostaglandins production which cause inflammation.

INFLAMMATION = PAIN

This will help establish healthy bacteria in your gut and digestive tract and eliminate stomach and intestinal inflammation that blocks absorption of your food. This step will help your body to digest and utilize the good healthy nutrients you are about to feed it.

I know this sounds difficult, but please understand that grain and gluten are toxic to your body. Eating these types of food is like putting diesel fuel in your high performance car that was designed for premium unleaded fuel.

  1. DRINK LOTS OF PURIFIED WATER. You need half your body weight in ounces of water every day. If you drink any caffeinated beverages throughout the day, you need to match the ounces of caffeinated drink with an equal amount of water. For example, if you weigh 100 pounds, you would need to drink 50 ounces of clean water each day. If you weigh 100 pounds and drink 10 ounces of coffee, then you need to drink 60 ounces of water per day (50 oz plus 10 oz because you drank 10 oz of coffee.) DEHYDTATION = MUSCLE CRAMPING = PAIN

Your body is 70% water. But what you may not know is that your cells are producing toxic waste every second of every day, and if you don’t have enough water to flush them out they will pool in your body and cause sickness and play a huge roll in your pain level.

Pardon my graphic example, but think about what it would be like if you used the restroom and had a bowel movement, but you only had one cup of water to flush it down. What would happen? The same thing happens inside you! Your body needs water to flush. Many people, when I first meet with them, are lucky to drink just one glass of water a day.

  1. TAKE HIGH-QUALITY SUPPLEMENTS. You will need initial supplementation to get your body over the “hump” and give yourself a much needed kick start. From the functional medicine testing that I have done I have found several common nutrients that people are lacking. Overcoming Chronic Fatigue

I’m always tired…what can I do?

I have been studying health and wellness since 1995 and this is a complaint I hear from over 90% of my patients when they first come into our office. They all suffer from a lack of energy, and the question is how do they get their energy back? I don’t blame them for wanting to feel more vigorous, I think all of us could use a little more pep in our step.

I have a habit of constantly observing people everywhere I go, airports, grocery stores, gyms, malls, restaurants, etc. and I am seeing the same thing not just in my clients but in everyone….

They look like they are dragging a 100 lb weight behind them.

This blows my mind! How can everyone look so tired and run down all the time? It took me several years of studying to uncover the main culprits of chronic fatigue, and I did not find it in my postgraduate medical textbooks.

If you look back in the medical text books from ten or fifteen years ago (I did) you will not see anything on chronic fatigue. How could that be? This “dis-ease” known as Chronic Fatigue did not exist as little as fifteen years ago! I had to discover what was so different now compared to ten or fifteen years ago.

I quickly eliminated several factors. Our nationwide chronic fatigue problems could not be due to a lack of doctors, hospitals, or prescription drugs. Why? Because we have more doctors, more hospitals and more drugs available to us now than at any other time in history, and we have more of these resources than any other nation in the world!
